PREVENTION EDUCATION

Risk factors for SBS/AHT include:  young parents, premature babies, unstable family situations, low socioeconomic status, and child-care providers with little or no experience or understanding of child care development.  The SBA Prevention Education Program targets hospitals, students, and community members.  To further prevent abuse to children, The Shaken Baby Alliance has collaborated with nationally recognized experts to develop evidence-based curriculums targeted to health care professionals, students, and community members.

In 2007, SBA and the State Bar of Texas Committee on Child Abuse and Neglect combined forces to produce a DVD entitled When Babies Cry.  Available in both in English and Spanish, SBA provides this DVD to over 2,000 community members annually, including teachers, child care providers, youth organizations, community members, and professionals who request a copy. Numerous hospitals have requested the DVD and show it internally to provide education related to coping with crying and prevention of child abuse.  For your copy of When Babies Cry, please contact us at info@shakenbaby.org or call 817-882-8686.  The cost is $25.00 per DVD plus shipping.  Proceeds from the sale of this DVD go to support all program areas for The Shaken Baby Alliance.

Our prevention education programs include:
1. Hospital Based SBS Prevention Program (Scheduled for release in 2019)

2.  When Babies Cry…We Cope (Middle & High School SBS Prevention Program)

As crying is the number one trigger for shaken baby syndrome, our Prevention Education program, When Babies Cry, We Cope focuses on teaching coping methods to middle and high school students. We offer tools to cope with a crying baby and reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).This program is scheduled to be redesigned in 2018 to incorporate the latest prevention and medical research from peer reviewed journal articles and research. Objectives will be aligned with state required TEKS.In addition, an instructor/teacher manual including written material, PowerPoint, Video teaching modules, and an online training program for teachers and students with materials and a pre/posttest for knowledge measurement will be developed.A data instrument will be incorporated to gather statistical data including the date, teacher, class, school, city, state, number of students, and gender/ethnic breakdown. Since 1998, we have provided prevention education to over 5,800 DFW high school students.

3.  When Babies Cry…What Can I Do to Prevent SBS? (Community SBS Prevention Education)

Many states require mandatory SBS prevention education for registered and licensed child care providers. Texas state law SB558 (1999) mandates that registered and licensed child care providers have one hour of yearly education on SBS, SIDS, and early brain development. Our Community SBS Prevention Education program addresses this need. Target audiences include churches, foster parent associations, probation departments, juvenile probation departments, youth agencies, and child care provider associations.

PLEASE NOTE: SBA HAS A WAITING LIST FOR FREE TRAININGS.  WE ARE HAPPY TO PROVIDE A DVD for $25.00.
